Hands On With the GP Power Tools – Administrator Tools: Using Security Profiler to Create Security Tasks

Winthrop DCThis post is part of the Hands On With the GP Power Tools (GPPT) – Administrator Tools series in which I am taking a hands on look at the various tools offered by GPPT.

As well as allowing you to see to which windows a user does not have access, Security Profilers (GP Power Tools area page >> Reports >> Security profiler) can also be used to construct new Security Tasks. To use this particular function in the window, the logged in user needs to have access to the standard Security Tasks (Administration area page >> Setup >> System >> Security Tasks) window.

When the user does have this access, the Security button on the Security Profiler windows action pane, will have a new Start Capture of Resources and Security Objects option available:

Once this option is enabled, all activity in Microsoft Dynamics GP is recorded; when the option is disabled, a security task can be created of all the used options.

To create a security task, open Security Profiler, click the Securtiy button on the action pane and click on Start Capture of Resources and Security Objects.

If there are entries already displayed in the Securtiy Profiler, you will be asked if they should be removed before starting to record:

Open the windows required for the new security task, making sure to launch all of the windows including any of the lookup ones. When all of the required windows have been added to the view, bring the Security Profiler window back to the front, click Security and then click on Stop Capture and create/update Security Task from selected rows:

This will launch the Create/Update Security Task window. In this example, I am creating a new task, but could update an existing one.

To create a new task, enter a Task ID, Task Name and Task Description.

You can also mark the Create or Update Security Role with the above Security Task to add the role to an existing role or create a new one.

When ready to create the security task, click the OK button on the action pane.
